I feel like I have not been around for a while. And I have not. Making some changes in my life again...I am always making changes. But then, the more things change the more they stay the same. One of my wiser friends put it nicely:

"When you finally arrive at a 'place' after years of waiting to get there...sometimes it's a lot different than the way you imagined it would be. At that point, maybe some part of you already knows you can't stay." - DS

I published my first issue of Sublime Rush since I assumed ownership in July of this year. I think it turned out rad, so check it out. I am gearing up for the next issue and already have many amazing artists lined up for it, as well as some "how to" articles for the independent artists out there.

My last artist statement simply said, "I like to paint." So, I had to update it, obviously.

My work explores the relationship between emerging sexualities and urban spaces.

With influences as diverse as Nietzsche and Roy Lichtenstein, new combinations are crafted from both explicit and implicit layers.

Ever since I was a teenager I have been fascinated by the traditional understanding of the mind. What starts out as triumph soon becomes corrupted into a dialectic of power, leaving only a sense of decadence and the inevitability of a new reality.

As temporal phenomena become frozen through diligent and personal practice, the viewer is left with an insight into the possibilities of our era.

Nah, not really. I promise I will update it more very soon, but life has been pretty....well, not so much busy, but eventful.

I have been much more involved with The German Village Art League lately. I am currently serving as Secretary of the group, so I have been volunteering my time for GVAL events and promoting GVAL and its artists. Check out the site.

Still very involved with Sublime Rush...it is in hold at the moment, but it will continue again very soon with interviews with Francesco D'Isa (Porn Saints) and other artists...well, these things are currently in the works and soon to be defined.

And painting! Trying to keep inspired. Loving my new studio...the space is much bigger than before - gotta love that...

I took this on my way back from Sarnia this past time. Sometimes life is like that...you don't know exactly what is in store for you right around the corner. But, that is what makes life exciting, right?

I want to live my life the way I want to and to be brave. I want to stride toward the fog with the hope that everything will work out just fine, and life will be even more beautiful than ever.

I don't have to be afraid, and I don't have to live my life based on the experiences of others. This is my life. These are my choices. Whether they are right or wrong, they are mine.

So, Canada. I gotta tell you, I have to blame my blasphemous mispronunciation of karate on being so imbued in an alternate state of mind. That's all I'm saying on the matter.

So, Canada. Hung out with the awesome Iaian Greenson for a few days, including two afternoons in his studio making some art. Did some art supply trades and created a couple teeny tiny pen and ink drawings. Looking forward to more days like those. And finally at the gallery show on Friday night. We double teamed the photo taking for the gallery's records.

Made a couple of little 6" x 6" works on paper with pen and ink, nail polish and glitter...and art pens. Loved it. This one is called 420+714=1112. Well, more like 1111 and 1112, but who's counting. Artists actually can do math, but they make it their own sometimes.

So, Canada. Yeah...I miss you already.

And I have the added pleasure of customs. It was not so bad when I looked like a lost lady with paintings and a list with names and prices scribbled on it. Now that I know what I am in for it ought to be easier, right? I will have my form filled out and my receipt ready for the gallery. It will be rad.

Circuit Boards and Suitcases

The fact is, I never quite unpack anymore. I probably will after the next trip up to see my Canadian friends. Until spring. My US friends call it Narnia...and why not? I have taken a liking to Canada. It seems meant to be in a way. I'm a northern girl. I like snow. Not this half-assed rainy, sleeting, ice mess that we get here. Snow. I do not mind the cold...although, if it is cold enough to freeze my eyeballs, that pisses me off.

I am more concerned about passing through the wardrobe this time around. Mostly the getting back to the US portion with my artwork. Need to find a certain form to fill out for Homeland Security. I sold one piece, but need to have proof I did not sell the others I bring back in so I can apply for a refund of the taxes that I paid in advance. Hopefully that will work out okay. I need to come up with a step by step guide on how to deal with customs for International shows. It has been an experience so far. A great experience. It is always an adventure.

If you have a spark in you, go set the world on fire.

One work I will never attempt to show internationally will be my circuit board and computer chip stuff. That is what is on the floor in my guest room. Lucky for me I have a hook up in getting discarded circuit boards. But the work will look dangerous and it is freakin' heavy!! I'm not sure where or if I will show this work. Mainly because it will have to be hung on a stud...otherwise it will fall off the wall and rip the nail out. But, it will be a good exercise for me to do something a little more 3-d and less organic.

All for now...got to write some shit up about design and Unicornification.

That phrase is usually reserved for Senecal because of the absolutely mind-warping conversations we have. Or monologues he has with me as his captive audience. His latest involves feedback on an icon set that I put together. Sensing the idiocracy of it all, he goes on a diabolical sketching mission (on 3x3 post-its, as per usual) and sketches people hugging rockets that are blasting toward the moon, and talks of how to incorporate Sasquatch into the mix. The elusive Sasquatch.

I just got done painting a work that I want to call The Place They Landed. Kind of inspired by the airport shutdown in China that was due to a UFO hovering over the airport on 9/11/10. Not sure of which airport. Feel free to use the power of Google to sate your thirst for that knowledge. It's the one on the right.

I went out last night to a place called Sushi Rock (aka high-priced, uber-trendy restaurant where all the pretty people like to go to look at one another...) The shot above was me just fucking around with Photo Booth and Photoshop (curves). i.e.PROCRASTINATION. And thinking, wow, I want to check into my studio and just paint tonight...as per usual on Fridays. But, it is good to get out there with the friends on occasion.

But later last night, back at home and feuled with a couple cups of coffee, I got down to business experimenting with a couple new mediums (clear tar and various hues of interference.) All in all a good night.

Brave Brave Birdy

As I sat out on the patio at a restaurant in Grandview, this brave, brave birdy paid us a visit. All she (or he) wanted was a little bread. You have to click on the photo above to really enjoy it. I think that little birdy would have plucked the bread out of my hand to get what it wanted.

So, I've decided to take myself out on the road more. Of course it is the same ole pattern. I find a place I like and I return. My goal for next year is to find a gallery in Scotland and in Asheville, NC, in addition Susan Kristjansson Gallery to the in Sarnia, Ontario.

And I hereby officially retire from what I called Biz shows...or the "art unexpected" scene. It was a nice run...a necessary run, and I appreciate everyone who wanted to show my art along the way.

My last "biz" show is at Cafe Brioso on Gay Street. It should be up for the rest of this month.

Well, I decided to steal the flower off of the table at the french restaurant and wear it in my hair, tucked behind my ear. My friend Isolde started calling me Lola that night... it has stuck...even more so than Pegalicious.

Studio Work - This weekend

A painting I worked on through last week and finished yesterday. I love it. It is calming to me.
Which is a good thing...life has been chaotic as usual between work and home and body. I had to chase off a creeper this week. My SB guy Ron introduced that term to me. A creeper is like a stalker, except he is casing the neighborhood. Granted, I will not do this again. Next time I promise I will call the cops. Pinky promise.
So yeah, introducing the rounded shapes into my work, what with all their straight, clean edges. That's new. Almost like bringing order to chaos, because the chaotic process is in there with it. And now that I wrote that, I think that is true. I believe everything I read, basically.
On another note, I basically avoided most things this weekend. I did manage to pick up my art, drop off my entry to OAL, and have lunch with my friend Karan. We went to my fav consignment shop Wholly Craft, where I found Little Little Kiss (this will get its own post) and a mag called Worn, which is very rad.

I also signed onto Twitter after a long, long hiatus. Sure, my FB fan page feeds it, but I had not posted any twits on the tweet site/app for a while. I am calling them twits on purpose - I know they are tweets, but that is fucking lame. I signed on to watch the antics of CatBagLady. Her quote is "I have momentary abberations. We all do." Yeah, we all do, so quit acting like you're so goddamn special. Although, the real cat bin lady is a horrible, horrible woman. Who the fuck puts a cat in a trash bin for fun? That is just psychotic. Which is why it is fun to watch people poke fun at her. Good times.

So, as you can see in the second photo, I am working on the next one, and have divided the canvas horizontally and added a lot of acrylic medium, both a hi gloss paste and a fiber paste, alternating them...smooth to rough. I want to apply the same flowing shapes to this one. I am trying to purvey chaos and control here to, along with some masculine and feminine aspects. Yeah...that sounds sufficiently full of it. lol

Toothiness

I had this root canal and crown put on around 6 or 7 years ago. It is now sitting on a pool of decay. Totally asymptomatic...does not hurt at all, which surprises the doctors. It does not surprise me since my nerves are for shit. Prolly just not getting the signals to the nerves in my brain. I'm a bit like Kick Ass...damaged nerves = no pain.

The one bad thing is that this bit of decay has eaten away at the bone. If left this way, eventually my jaw bone will deteriorate and then one fine day BAM!!!! Broken jaw....which would be gross since parts of the bone would be gone and that infection would get everywhere. Nastiness is what it is. Pure fuckin' nastiness.

The Cynical Optimist + Ms. Voyuer

I think it is a fallacy to assume someone is negative just because they choose to question someone's perception of reality...or their reality. A cynical optimist simply looks at the big picture...

I have not posted anything for a bit...I started writing what is above weeks ago...and got bored. I am currently researching two artists who just amaze me with their talent and skill. WOW. It will be wonderful to have them as part of the next issue of Sublime Rush for sure!

Getting ready for the Image Optical opening reception in August. Doing some smaller works to sell that night. Also need to get my list of contacts together and start a quarterly news letter. Update the CV...work on Pattern Changes...plan the Folio project...and so on and et cetera...plus a thousand more things.

Artist Statement: I think between my various titles and the choices of music, you can get the point. Not to be flippant about it all, but I think I would be over stating it. From a technical standpoint...I LOVE WORKING BIG now.

The Unattractiveness of Being Emo Past 22...

Yep, I said it. And I patterned the title after the usual cadence of a few Type-O-Negative songs. Seems like a person should have their emotional turmoil in check by sometime in their 20s. But no. Can you really come to know yourself until your 30s? Then, you get to know you in your 30s, and spend your 40s exploring what you know about you. I suppose, if you are derailed in this process, then you fall back on that gothy undercurrent. That is if you developed one sometime in your life.

Since my paintings are about some emotional explorations using color and shape, I tap into my "gothy undercurrent" on purpose. You never see it...unless you are in my studio- and really even then, you never see it. And what I mean specifically is that it is "emotions in the spectrum of negative energy versus positive". I will not apologize for this. It is what it is. Yes, it has manifested through events in my life that I will not share with you.

Just look at the art. Enjoy it. If it makes you feel happy, then kick ass. I always want it to be open to your interpretation.

Scooby Snacks VS Velociraptors.

This is the rating system that I have chosen for my blog. Why? It is pure nonsense. I mean, not that I do not care what you have to say. I do. I have people weigh in on what I do every single day. Everybody is an expert when it comes to visual design. People have opinions. They know what they like. I am fine with that. Subjective. Objective. No matter. Bring it.

To me Velociraptors are not a good thing. They will gang up on you. They are cold and calculated. They want to eat you. It's true. Or, it would be true if some dumb ass geneticist decided to bring them back and found a way to do it. But, since it is a fantasy, you may find velociraptors to be kick ass. I completely understand. I want to have one on a T-shirt with the latest quip. Why not?

Scooby Snacks to me, are fantastic. I love them. They are what makes me happy. They may not make you happy, though. And that is okay. I think we can agree to disagree and still get along.

So, if you want to rate, just pick your favorite or least favorite item on the list. Scooby Snacks, or Velociraptors.

Artwork: This is called Jungle Lizard. It was the closest thing I had to a velociraptor. The original art is gone. I sent original work off to a postcard show near Chicago and never got it back. AND I did not even get into the show. Grrrr.

The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower). It is taking something that, if left to its own devices, may grow into a rather large thing. But this is a controlled and manipulated version of a tree. I can draw parallels to a lot of things here, but I really just wanted to show these photographs I shot one morning last year at FPC.
The originals were full-color, but I found a lot more beauty in them with the shapes and the contrast when I desaturated the photos.

This canvas pretty much fills up my small studio, making it seem even more immense than it is.

Title: Old Wars, New Wars, End of War
Inspiration: NIN: 12 Ghosts II, The Doors: The End, NIN: A Warm Place

Plans: Let me preface this by saying that my reference point for an old war is Vietnam. Obviously I know there are much older wars, but I am looking at this from my point of view, not an historical point of view. I plan on dividing this canvas into thirds. The divisions will not be obvious, and one will flow into the next.
I will start with Vietnam at the bottom, flow up to the desert wars, and then, at the very top, have an explosion, or something that resembles my work, Great Cities.
I admit, this is a very pessimistic view of humanity and war because I am saying the war the will end wars is nuclear. But, a lot of times, that is the way it seems.

I mean look a the amount of people who follow Glen Beck, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. All of that just equals a damned shame. But freedom of speech is there for all of us - including the idiots and the zealots and the idiotic zealots.

I signed up to be a regular contributor to Sublime Rush. I had to pick a title...I think Viceroy of Vixenology would not be suitable...mostly because it implies both male and female. To be completely feminine in this title, it would have to be Vicereine of Vixenology. I was discussing my title dilemma with a friend last night, and he thought that since it is based in the UK, I should be a Knight. So Sir LolaPeg. So then we wondered if females can be knighted. Turns out, they can. But they are called Dame. And now I understand why the word dame implies a brassy, strong female. Dame LolaPeg. So, what I ended up with is a multiple choice of Producer, Communicator, or Contributor. Yep. just keepin' it real.

Last night I watched Pollock for the first time. I admit that I did not know a whole lot about the artist before, other than the fact that people make fun of his work...or they claim that anyone can do it. I disagree. Or maybe I agree that someone can, but why should they? Unless it is for an educational exercise.

After learning about him and his history, I think I have come to appreciate him and how he evolved, or maybe devolved. It seems like he found a higher self in how he worked with the paint. It is a different kind of abstract for sure. It does not look like anything. It is just a man whipping paint onto the canvas. Why not?

I still think I think like Pollock. He used liquid paints. He let the paint do what it wanted on the canvas. He likened it with chaos. He was close to nature. He was a drunk...I am not a drunk, but I have an addictive personality.

Gah, he was a fucking mess. But, I appreciate that kind of a mess. I know he was an Aquarius, but I bet his ascendant is Pisces. I would love to look at his birth chart. He was not for this world...or maybe he was not for his time. Or perhaps he was just in time.

I hate that the film he made about his process did him in and made him feel like a fraud - it seemed like that was his undoing, as self-doubt is with so many artists. Self-doubt should be beautiful because it keeps you honest, self-aware and humble. It makes you keep on trying and trying harder to achieve better.

What I appreciate most about him was letting go of structure. I think when you let go of so much of the structure of realism, surrealism, etc., painting is about energy and what is in the soul. There is something that pulls from a higher source within the artist...and maybe that is the chaos.

Collaboration - Viva Mixed Tapes

Viva Mixed Tapes is the collaboraton that is most on my mind. I want to veer toward my other style and method of art making. I am excited about this one because I am working with my friend Iaian on it. He has mad skills and is self-taught, as well. He is a pop artist. So we have someone who admires Basquiat and Warhol, with someone who admires Warhol, but behaves like Pollock (not intentional). So, Viva Mixed Tapes came about when he was one his way home from the gallery late one night and he asked me what we would do without our iPods. Then we started talking about the love and thoughtfulness that goes into making a mixed tape for someone and how that is just long gone. Sure, I imagine people still burn a CD or two instead of sending a play-list, but those mixed tapes were hard to make, so they were always made with love. Viva Mixed Tapes! I am sure this collaboration will embody that kind of love and appreciation, as well.

I shot the photo above at at restaurant that leaves all of the hot sauces out on the counter for you to take to the table. I tend to always grab the one with the safety wrapper on the bottle. This one had it, but was still low on the hot sauce. And I could remove the lid without tearing the safety wrapper. So, that left me wondering if I should use it. Even though the other bottles on the counter were opened, and I have used opened bottles before...because that is what you do...it is what they are there for. But, this was weird, so I did not use it. Because it had the safety wrapper, I wondered more if it was safe, or if it was a trap.

I know some men who emphatically say that they are awesome. I often find that I think they are awesome, too. Although their lack of humility might tend to turn me off, since they are charming and talented, I tend to eventually agree with their self-assessment. Then I find myself telling them they are awesome, thereby perpetuating their self-myth...well, I guess it is not really a "self"-myth if others think it is true, but you know what I mean...their persona....What was I saying? Wait, where the fuck am I? ........

Provoking The Viewer with Color

I have often been heard as saying, "I wish I went to art school". But, in the same breath, I can explain to you why I am happy I never went to art school. The latter has much more influence in the freedom of expression within my artwork. If I had gone to art school, I am not sure that I would feel as free to throw 5 paint colors on a canvas just to see what happens. I have taken several classes on graphic design and they have included color theory. But that is just a light, surfacy overview of a deep ocean of information. So, I am not 100% art-school free. Let's just say I have enough knowledge to be dangerous...nah, actually that saying would imply I think I know more than I do. Instead, I know enough to know that I know very little at all about color theory.

Yet, I love color. Someone has suggested to me that I dull my canvases down...actually, a couple people have. But, to me that would be like selling out to please the masses. When I use the bright, intensity of a color without dulling it down, I do it with purpose. It is a statement I am trying to make in the painting itself. It is not because I ran out of my perfect-gray mix. It is not because I am matching a color-requirement from the Crate and Barrel line. It is because I have an emotion in mind that has to do with a current situation in my life and I relate it with color, and that color is often intense. And a lot of times people pick up on the emotion...even without the title and even though the work is abstract. Sometimes they relate it to their life and their experiences and they let it speak to who they are. I like that just as much. My work is not just about form and color, it is about how form and color speaks to emotions.

I think what my title is referring to is The Bachelor. I don't even watch that show, but it and shows like it, are no fucking inane that you can go along and add comments and be "right there" with people. I hate reality television. I never liked reality television. People waste their precious lives watching other people live theirs. But it is not even their lives. It is fragments of an over-the-top version of strangers (or god forbid, someone you know), that has been haggled together into whatever is the vision of the producer. Which, nothing against the producer; they at least make the inane shit mildly entertaining for the masses, so then the masses are placated and held into watching the advertisement. I did not even like the original version of this television formula/model - Real World, which was just a collection of arch types (read Chuck Klosterman's essays on it). But you know what the overarching deal is, with all of the reality-television BS? It is a way for people to have something in common. These reality stars are people's gossip surrogates. The world is still fucking high school and Hollywood is banking on it.

Anyway, no thanks.

So, one of my Scottish friends said that his tartan is made up of star-burst patterns and has "juicy" printed across his ass. I thought that was worth passing along. If I have offended any of my Scottish friends, my apologies. I still think it is funny.

Took my work down down from La Fogata the weekend before last. It is in my entryway waiting to be taken literally across the alley from La Fogata to Union Cafe on Saturday morning. I have a few extra new pieces to add to that show. Working on some big stuff.

I am an extraordinary zombie who finds happiness mundane and is romantically apocalyptic. I also enjoy long walks on the beach in hopes for a tsunami, collecting geodes with traces of Carbon 14, and growing tropical plants only to have them wither away in my too-dry atmosphere, subsequently enjoying and tracking their demise.

Oh I am kidding. Not feeling that tragic.

I have captured my birth chart in all of its glory. Of course this means nothing to most people. I am studying astrology again, which is a dead art, since the universe is constantly evolving.

HUGE Canvases Everywhere

I had a great pace going this weekend, creating work for an upcoming show. I am looking forward to transporting this one. So nice to not be dealing with heavy framed boards!! I think even the biggest canvases I have do not weigh as much as a large board. Plus, I am getting use to working bigger and enjoying the surface. I thought I would miss the boards, and they definitely make it easier to get the effects I like, but I am adapting.

You know, just a few of years ago, I would grab The Other Paper and scour the art ads for call for entries, thinking, wow, wouldn't it be cool to show my art? Today, my art is pictured in one of their cover story photos for Columbus' Alternative Art Spaces.

The article is really worth checking out. It talks about the art scene here in Columbus being very independent, and how independent artists can make it happen on their own. I have thought about approaching galleries along the way, but I am having too much fun working with these alternative venues. Just to name some...

A Gift That Keeps On Giving

I may have talked about this painting on this blog at some point in the past few years. If so, I am sure you would not have read it, or you would have a hell of a time finding the post. At one point in time I decided to put it in a box and ship it off to my friend M in Seattle. He is the one who inspired the painting. I painted another one and he said that the shapes in it looked lik spark plugs on peyote. Well, of course a comment like that burns a visual in my head that has to be brought into existence.

M is a pop artist, who use to be an entertainer in the 80s. In a very Warhol-like way, he documents his life. He posts this documentation on iamabee on dA. Below is his documentation of opening the package I sent to him.

Found a few old pictures of my parents in the photo album of movie star photos. This was December 31, 1949. They eloped to the hills of Kentucky to get married. They were high school sweethearts. Jack was captain of the football team and a star football player. He won a scholarship to play football at OU, but declined. Mom was a pretty, brainy chick. They had babies and lived happily ever after.

Until 1968 or so, then they had one more oops baby.

RIP Aunt Mary

I just found out my husband's aunt Mary died yesterday. She was a feisty old woman in her eighties. Even with all the tragedy of the past few years she kept on. I heard she was withering away because she missed Dorothy and Bud so much, but she probably still had enough fire to go on forever. When she went out to walk her dogs yesterday, she fell on the ice and hit her head. She then had a heart attack while lying in the snow. Another tragic end.

I only hope to be as feisty and fiery as she was in my life. I loved and admired that woman.

Painted With Dead Roses - WIP

That is so fucking goth, isn't it? Yes, I painted this stretched canvas with a big, ugly fan brush, a dirty sponge and a dead rose from my love. I was listening to Burnt Flowers Fallen (not on purpose...oh, isn't that kismet?). The only thing that I can add to make it more gothy is to say I used my tears caused by my lover. But the last part is not true, so screw it. It means nothing.

WIP - Crackle Medium

Whoa, my ADD is raging today. Anyway, I started this 24" x 24" WIP today. I am using 2 paste mediums as the base. The top half has a crackle medium (will crackle once dried), while the bottom half has a medium body gloss paste. The latter shines like glass once it is varnished. I shaped the top to work into fiery rain. The bottom, a tumultuous ocean. You know, me and my creation/destruction "fetish". I just hope these paste mediums add to the effect!

It was 11:30 last night when I realized I had not completed my first of 2010 artwork as planned. So, I got my ass down the hall to my studio to work on it. This is it. I used 10 colors and did some designs in sets of 10. I used liquid acrylic, fan brushes (I heart Bob Ross) and air. Then varnish, smelly like I like it, and a bit o silver pen.

The Golden Suicides

Every once in a while I talk about The Golden Suicides: artists Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan. Evidently one of my favorite writers, Bret Easton Ellis, is writing a screenplay for a movie about them. It may or may not be released in 2011.

I forget now how I first heard about the couple...it was either on NPR or in an issue of Vanity Fair. Their story, as sad and distraught as it was, has always fascinated me. Blake was a digital artists, doing animations and produced art for Rock Star games (you know, GTA - Vice City). Duncan produced video games, but wanted to be a screenplay writer. You can read a ton of stuff about them out there on the internets, and see some of what they created while they were here.

2009 was an interesting year for me. I managed to keep up without having a relapsing episode, which is groovy. Although, I did not escape a few rough nights of massive muscle spasms and pain, one being last night. I had some other set backs...mostly because of stress-related-excessive-consuming: ie food, libations, and buying too much shit. But you know, that is what 2010 will be about: self control and documentation.

On the art front, it was an awesome year.

Also have really gotten into the belly dancing again this year. I see that as a life-time thing and is worth every moment and resource I put into it. One of my goals looking forward to 2011 is to perhaps perform. Why not??

Working on two 3' x 3' canvases as Christmas gifts for a couple of friends...

I covered with a base color, taped down and then applied white paint and texture in some of the squares. I have removed the tape now and will begin painting the white squares...more to come.
